Day 21 – Edinburgh, 2012

Woke up stiff and sore, joints aching, as if we’d spent the night before partying in slippery mud and rain. Funny that. We gave the hotel breakfast a miss, as it wasn’t very good, and wandered over the road to the COnan Doyle for a full breakfast. Haggis, bacon, black pudding, all the usual suspects except the potato scone that is often to be found in these parts. Full of tea and beans, we had a quiet morningg. Our digestions are starting to rebel a little, complaining about having three large meals each day. Even with the walking, we’re still eating a lot of really good but really rich food.

We tried to do our washing today, but the laundromat was closed wo we did a few bits in the sink. Came a bit closer to simple food, with the discovery of a multinational cafe in a little arcade, promising Italian, Turkish as well as local food. Lunch was a simply but yummy spaghetti and meatballs, with a big coffee. Best coffee I’ve had for a while, as sadly the magical bean is something they don’t do so well on this island. Waitress was entertaining, being chirpy to disguise a crazy hangover, probably also full of redbull and Irn Bru.

All is quiet on New Year’s Day, and so were we. Dinner was also Italian, a simple tomato, cheese and prawn pizza, followed by a deep fried Snickers for dessert (L’s idea, she really wanted a Mars Bar but they were all out). Snickers work differently to Mars Bars when deep fried, the peanut gives the bar texture and a peanut-butter taste, while a Mars turns into a bar of molten sugar held together by various unnatural forces.

Quiet night in watching QI and Mock the Week.
