Day 15 – Charleton Hawthorne – Bath, Boxing Day

After a light breakfast of tea and toast, and a pause to round up the troops, we were inviteed to take part in a tradition, the Boxing Day walk. By all accounts this tradition can involve being confronted by angry horses, cows, and other mishaps. While these aren’t guaranteed, they are not unexpected, either.

Given the time it was a short walk, just up the nearby Cadbury Castle, an alleged site of Camelot. The path up is quite precarious and muddy, but no one slipped over. At the top are the remains of mud fortifications, an iron age hill fort. These made for a wonderful path to walk around and take in the glorious view — even without perfect visibility we could see all the way to Glastonbury Tor. It’s quite a fascinating place (your homework is to google it and check it out for yourself.

Following the walk it was time to have a crack at the leftovers, before heading off to Bristol airport to drop cousin R off. Overall it was an amazing Christmas, one I’ll never forget, and one full of surprises. To be able to share such a special time with almost complete strangers, and to be made to feel thoroughly welcome throughout, I think that’s what this time of year is all about.

Not much to report for the first day in Bath, the B&B was comfortable, but after two days of eating it was time for an early night.
