    7NNT-Day 0: Prep

Lagman, shivit oshi, khao soi, pho, banh canh, pancit, jook-sing, laksa, hor fun. It’s time to travel again. Case is packed, I know where my passports are, a new playlist has been synced to my venerable ipod mini, and the world awaits. Uzbekistan, Thailand, Viet Nam, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore, 5 weeks of sun, fun, walking, touring, sweating, drinking, and of course, eating. Some of these places I’ve been before (this is my 5th time in Viet Nam) while others are completely new and unknown, places I’ve only seen on maps, or read about, or, in the case of the first stop, gone from almost zero knowledge to…

    Vietnam the third, Day -1

And we’re back, just about ready for the next trip. This time it’s back to Vietnam, and a few days on the way back in that Disneyland with the death penalty, Singapore. Our first trip in a post-COVID world. The packing is almost done, just the few basic bits like electronics and toiletries to pack. Nothing fancy is needed on this trip, as it involved Hoi An so there will be many more clothes joining us there. It’s an early morning flight, so I doubt I’ll sleep much tonight, but L has done her magic on the bookings so it’s business class all the way to Hanoi. It goes without…

    Day 0: PER to KUL

The tired and grumpy baby edition. And that’s not referring to the grumpy and tired baby waiting to board behind me, heck I sympathise entirely. It’s way past everyone’s bedtime, and who at Malaysia Airlines decided that 2.10am was a reasonable time to fly? I’m talking about the muppet waiting next to me, who has his mobile volume turned up and all the sounds trned on. I’m getting every beep, whorp, woowoo, and ding, and in my rather tired state not enjoying the soundtrack at all. I may not have documented this previously, but consider this a new pet peeve: just turn that shit off. I’m killing time, waiting to…

    Been halong time…

Yup. Due to Life, the universe, and everything, I haven’t used my passport in over 2 years. I’ve lost my gold frequent flyer status, and have 6 months to rescue my silver. Some days it feels the furthest I’ve been lately is Mandurah, and regardless of what my ipod plays it doesn’t look like the cover of Born Sandy Devotional anymore. But this is about to change. In just over a month, this blog will be alive with images of Indochina; posts about pachyderms, musings on nuoc mam cham, ramblings about rambutans, dribbling about durian, scribblings on sticky rice, warblings about wats, and ponderings on pho. Stay tuned.

[NY Day -5] A new trip beckons

It’s been a while, and there are a few posts missing. And somewhere an update crunched the template I liked so there may be some further changes to how it looks around here. But enough of the boring stuff, a new trip is on the horizon! Next Sunday I’ll hop into a big ol jet airliner that will take me to JFK in NYC. As Michelle Shocked said, “New York City, imagine that”. It’ll be a whirlwind 13 day trip taking in the sights and sounds of both New York City and Saratoga Springs, NY. I’ll share some more stuff later, once the packing starts. <insert a message from my…

British Isles tour 2014, Day 0

Qantas lounge, Perth Airport. Next stop, London, to start the Ticonderoga takes on the British Isles tour. First stop is Loncon 3, the World Science Fiction Convention, where we’ll wheel and deal. Then it’s a few days down time in Plymouth with L’s aunt, before Dublin and Shamrokon to wheel and deal some more. L is already on the road, France, Belgium. We’ll meet up in London on Thursday. Aside from the wheeling and dealing and glamorous and sexy world of small press publishing, I’m aiming to tick off the following: see the Thames Barrier in action (Wednesday 13 August is the monthly maintenance where they do this) drink a…

    TiconTour13 is nigh

I thought I’d have a bit more time to post the lead up to this, but am almost all packed and off to the airport tonight. Tomorrow morning I’ll have 2.5 hours at Changi airport, then it’ll be next stop LHR (London Heathrow). I should be arriving around 3.30 pm GMT (none of that UTC stuff here for this trip!). The cat is being pouty beside me, she knows what suitcases mean: one less slave. As to the cases, I’m taking two: a small, almost hand-luggage sized one full of books (14.7kg), and a larger one with everything else (12 kg). I’ve also gone to the darkside, travelling with a…

    Departure

Sipping on a Glenmorangie 10yo, in the emirates lounge, thinking I could get used to this. Takes a certain amount of tedium from transit. Boarding call, and off to the plane. Next stop, Dubai.

    Departure –3 days

It’s starting to dawn on me that this time next week, we’ll be somewhere else. Morocco. Land of the tagine, the fez, the western edge of the Sahara. I can say thank you in French and Arabic so I’ll hopefully be okay—I’ll have to try to remember numbers and things in French. But yes, no and thank you is a good start. I haven’t started packing yet, that’s something to do this weekend. I’m not so worried about making sre I have everything. I’ve got the essentials sorted, and if I get cold I’ll buy something.
